I started playing guitar a year ago and just bought my seventh guitar last week. When I was trying to play this new Gibson SG, I was hit with a realization that this new guitar is not going to make me play any better than the six other guitars I bought over the past year. This made me think of different clients and people I have met in the gym over the years who keep looking for the magic pill to weight loss and a flat stomach.

Its hard work losing weight and having a flat stomach just like learning how to play guitar. I spent more time on eBay and in guitar stores looking for the perfect guitar that would make me a great player instead of practicing and taking lessons every week. Being a personal trainer I get approached in the gym all the time with questions like, “Is this the best exercise to flatten my stomach?”.  Unfortunately there is no one exercise that you can do for 2 minutes that will instantly get you a flat stomach just like there is no guitar that will instantly make me a great player. If you want a flat stomach, workout for an hour everyday doing basic movements. In addition, eat a low calorie-high nutritious diet made up of whole natural foods for a year and hopefully you will reach your goal.

Before I take on a new client I always ask them if they have ever worked with a personal trainer before. I find it to be a bad sign if they tell me yes I have worked with 25 different trainers. This is similar to what I did by buying guitar after guitar thinking that this new guitar will be the one that will show me how to play. It is possible some of the trainers this person was working with were not the best but most likely they were looking for that magical trainer who knows all the secrets. Like the info commercials on TV, just do this for five minutes a day and you will lose up to 20 pounds in one week. You just have to put the time and effort in when it comes to getting in shape and learning how to play guitar.

What I’m going to do is sell a few guitars and start taking lessons. I took a few lessons from a great guy in my town last year so it time to give him a call and set up a regular schedule and start practicing every day. That’s what I recommend to you. Find a trainer, buy a book or read my website, make a plan and just start eating right and working-out every day consistently for a year. I know you will be a lot happier for it.
