An innovative fitness blog helping clients look & feel their best!
“I started this blog back in 2009 with the thought that my clients could learn about Fitness, Health, and Nutrition principals. I started out creating videos and posting them here for people to see how to do the exercises correctly and with good form. Almost a decade later, the mission has not changed.” – Mike Cola
Fitness Contrarian is all about mastering the ageless workout and diet. The goal of this blog is to teach you how to build muscle in your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s while staying lean and not over training.

Grains are super nutritious, delicious and easy to make. I cook most of my grains in a rice cooker. These cookers use a sensor to tell when the liquid has been absorbed. All you have to do is add one part grain and 2 parts water and hit the start button. When the water is absorbed the grain is cooked. Some grains (….)read more
I’ve never been a fan of the Biggest Loser. In general, I always felt that the show is sending a negative message to America about exercise and fitness. I can almost go as far as saying that the show has single-handily set back the fitness industry decades (….)read more
Now it’s time to start thinking about you’re fitness plans for 2017. After the first of the year I always sit down with each of my personal training clients and talk about what worked for them in 2016 and what did not. What I have learned over the 25 years of training clients is to capitalize on the success my clients have had in the past. The mistake (….)read more
You can’t focus your whole life around food if you want to lose weight. A number of my personal training clients who have a hard time losing weight seem to schedule their lives around meals and spend a lot of their time talking about or focusing on food.
I have over weight clients and friends who would never think about missing a meal. They are always talking about what restaurant they went to. Or they can’t wait to get home and have a big dinner. They spend a lot of their mental energy thinking about food all day and are very frustrated when they can’t seem to lose weight no matter what they try(…)read more
At least once in your life you have to count calories if you want to be successful in long term weight loss. When my personal training clients complain to me that they can’t lose weight no matter what they do, my first question to them is “How many calories are you eating each day?” I know a lot of the popular diets over the years claim that you don’t have to count calories to lose weight, but in my opinion you do (….)read more
When you’re playing sports and your main goal is to win you’re most likely training too much. More specifically, you have to train in a manner that my not be healthy for you but will get you prepared to win. Training for a competitive sport is very different than training to be in top physical condition. Just about any motivated person can get into incredible shape without spending too much time training each week. They can do this while staying healthy and never hurting themselves by over training and breaking down their bodies(….)read more
Tight hip flexors can cause a number of problems with your body. Two of the biggest problems is back pain and hip pain. When the three primary hip flexors known as Psoas Major, Illacus and Rectus Femoris are tight they can tilt your pelvis into a position that extends the spine. This may cause back pain. Most people will try to fix the problem with stretching; however, in my opinion stretching will not permanently help and may even lead to further dysfunction.
When a personal training client comes to me with tight hip flexors the first thing we do is try to figure out why the hip flexors are tight. When you have a tight muscle it’s generally tight for a reason; therefore, just doing stretching is not going to solve the problem(….)read more
The biggest cause of obesity is a diet high in sugar, processed foods and refined grains. Unfortunately I just described the diet that most people in the US are eating everyday. Throw in a sedentary lifestyle and we have the perfect formula for diabetes and a slew of preventable illnesses.
If I had to pick a diet that would cure the obesity problem in the US, it would be a diet that is very high in vegetables, low in grains (if your not very active), and high in omega-3 fats with adequate amount of protein from lean meats, chicken, fish, and eggs(….)read more
I started my fitness blog Fitness Contrarian about 2.5 years ago. I really enjoy doing research and seem to spend half my time reading other people’s health and fitness blogs. When I first started blogging I had no idea how many websites were out there in the fitness niche. However, over time I seem to keep going back to just a handful of great sites so I wanted to put together my list of the best fitness blogs for 2011(….)read more
