An innovative fitness blog helping people over 40 years of age to look & feel their best!
“I started this blog back in 2009 with the thought that what is popular and trendy in health and fitness is not always correct. In fact, a good percentage of the time individuals are just following the crowd and getting frustrated by not getting the results they want. “ – Mike Cola
The goal of this blog is to figure out what are the most advanced innovative ways to: improve your health, build a strong flexible body and maintain an optimal weight. Mike utilizes his 30 years of fitness training experience along with analyzing the latest research, to sift through the noise and find out what really works.

I can confidently say that if you eat heavily processed foods on a regular basis you will be shortening your life. Research has found that being over weight is responsible for 216,000 premature deaths each year and the over consumption of processed foods are a major contributor to the obesity epidemic in the US.
Processed foods are loaded with sugar, salt, trans fats, preservatives and empty calories. Everything you want to avoid in your diet is in processed foods. Most people know that processed foods are not good for (…)
If you know what you’re going to order before you sit down at a restaurant your chances of making a healthy choice will go up tenfold. Once you sit down at a restaurant and have a few sips of your martini you will pretty much order anything on the menu regardless of calories
My personal training clients were always asking me what to eat when they go out to dinner. For years I used to frequent restaurants that my clients would go to so that (…)
Two studies just came out. One about the benefits of eating foods high in Vitamin E to lower your risk of developing dementia and another talking about the risk of Vitamin D deficiencies in older adults. 1. Foods Rich in Vitamin E Lowers Your Dementia Risk Eating...
Conventional wisdom will tell you that eating the yolks of eggs will raise your cholesterol and lead to heart disease. Here at Fitness Contrarian; however, we feel the opposite. Egg yolks are the most nutritious part of the egg.
Whole eggs have been a corner stone of my breakfast for years. One of my favorite breakfasts are three large whole organic eggs made in an omelet with half an avocado and a few slices of tomato. First, I heat up the pan with medium to light heat (…)
Trying to control your weight with a lot of exercise is a losing battle. Eventually you will wind up burned out, unhealthy and have a number of over use injuries. You have to learn how to control your weight with your diet.

I just got back from a week long vacation at the beach with my family in Sag Harbor, NY . We had a great time. The weather was very hot, humid and sunny. I don’t remember being so hot at the beach. You had to be in the water all day just to be comfortable. I left the beach around 1:00 PM one day to get lunch for my wife and kids and was surprised to see so many people running and biking in 100 degree heat with high humidity in the middle of the day (…)
I ran a contest last year called Get Fat Fast. In this contest I asked everyone who is having trouble loosing weight to write down the 10 foods they would eat if they had to gain weight quickly (clink the link Get Fat Fast and checkout some of the lists people sent in). This is an exercise I have had my personal training clients do to help them lose weight. The reason for making the list is to change how you feel about eating the foods that make you fat fast (…)
The first challenge for avoiding summer weight gain is Memorial Day weekend. I was at three different barbeques this weekend and saw a lot of people having a good time but unfortunately over indulging on empty calories. Opposed to conventional wisdom, most people can eat red meat and have an alcoholic drink at a barbeque while avoiding summer weight gain (…)
You have to assume that every hamburger you eat or any ground beef you’re cooking can have E. Coli in it. Ever since the scare back in 2007 when over 845,000 pounds of ground beef was recalled for possible E. Coli contamination, I never trusted eating hamburgers that I did not thoroughly cook myself.
E. Coli can be a deadly bacterium that can be easily prevented by cooking your ground beef completely. Jeff Bender an expert on food safety from the University of Minnesota said (…)
Eating less can be as simple as not putting the serving dishes on the table. A new study from Cornell University called “Serve Here: Eat There” looked at the eating habits of 78 adults. Brian Wansink, the director of the Cornell Food & Brand Lab said “We looked at...
