Over the years, a number of my female personal training clients have had a difficult time with hot flashes. Since most of my clients are baby boomers, many of them are going through menopause right now. The worst part about menopause seems to be the night sweats. Once they are woken from a hot flash in the middle of the night they have a real hard time going back to sleep.
I’m always looking for ways to make my client’s lives more enjoyable and healthy. In response to many of my female clients showing up for a training session exhausted from not sleeping due to night sweats, I’ve done some research(…)
I definitely find a correlation between kids who are overweight and families who eat dessert on a regular basis. Over the years, so many of my clients have talked to me about how they can’t get their kids to lose some weight. For a number of parents, it’s a mystery why their kids are overweight.
I’ve been a personal training for over 25 years and spend a lot of time talking to my clients. I analyze their diets and lifestyle, and try to figure out why they are over weight (…)
Conventional wisdom will tell us that the only way to lose weight and keep it off is with long hard cardio sessions. The longer and harder the cardio for weight loss the better. A minimum of 30 minutes of cardio per day in the higher end of your target zone is recommended but more is considered better.
At Fitness Contrarian we think differently. We believe you should control your weight with your diet and not with long intense cardio sessions. It is true that you will burn a lot of calories doing hard aerobics every day for long periods of time but this will be at the expense of your health. Daily medium to intense long aerobic workouts breaks the body down and leads to burnout, fatigue, injury, a suppressed immune system (…)
Conventional Wisdom (CV) will tell you the importance of breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. If you skip breakfast, your metabolism will be slowed, you will have low energy, you won’t think clearly, you will be starving and wind up bingeing later. All these beliefs have been proven to not be true except for bingeing. You can always binge if you want to even if you’re not hungry.
There were so many mornings when I woke up and was not at all hungry but felt like I had to eat a big breakfast because CV told me to (…)
We all need some form of weight lifting for good health. It can be your own body weight, free weights or any type of resistance that makes you push, pull and just work hard. I’m not that concerned what type of resistance you choose as long as you workout relatively hard and keep it short in duration.
They’re so many different ways to create a response and get stronger with resistance training. My favorites are free weights, machines, bands, medicine balls and my own body weight. There is just no getting around it. If you want to have strong bones, good muscle mass, flexibility, strength, a high metabolism and a firm shapely body you have to lift something reasonable heavy on a regular basis.
I wanted to give an example of what the perfect baby boomer fitness program should look like. If you’re a Baby Boomer whose goals are general fitness and good health, this is the perfect program for you. I’ve been a personal trainer for over 25 years and most of my clients have always been the ageless baby boomers, so I know what works for them.
Most people have a big misconception about how much time you really have to spend working out in a week to be fit. As long as you control your weight with your diet, which is what I generally recommend (…)
My kids think Mallomar cookies are the world’s greatest tasting cookies. I love them too.
If you live in the United States you can only buy Mallomars from early October to April. It is my understanding that Mallomars melt too easily so they are only produced seanonally. Now that it is fall my wife just brought home a large case of them from Costco. I just had my first Mallomar of the season and it did not disappoint. It was fresh, crisp and went down easy. My daughter ate about five in less than 5 minutes(…)
We all know how important it is to get adequate sleep but so few of us do get enough. Your body can’t function at an optimal level if you are always sleep deprived. So many important reactions happen to our bodies when you are asleep. Vital hormones are released when you are asleep that help your brain function, immune system and can even help you to lose weight. Check out this article I wrote called Lack of Sleep Leads to Weight Gain.
Out of all my Fitness Contrarian principles this is probably the hardest one for me to follow. Owning a gym and training clients is a very labor-intensive job with long hours. I’m up at 5:30 AM six days per week training clients and spending whatever remaining time I have with my wife and kids (…)
